History
The Boston Blitz have played in all 5 seasons of the United States Chess League (USCL) since their acceptance into the league on April 25, 2005. The Blitz were the 7th team to be accepted into the 8-team inaugural season of the USCL.
The 2005 season was kicked off with a match between New York Knights and Boston Blitz on August 31, 2005. This match, which would be the beginning of a classic rivalry between the two teams, ended up in a 2-2 tie.
The Blitz finished the year with a creditible 4-6 record, good enough for 3rd in the Eastern Division behind New York and Baltimore, but failed to make the play-offs.
The first official 8-player Blitz roster included GM Larry Christiansen, IM (now GM) Eugene Perelshteyn, IM (now GM playing for San Francisco) Josh Friedel, FM Steven Winer, FM William Kelleher, FM Paul MacIntyre, NM Charles Riordan and Ilya Krasik.
The Blitz won the Eastern Division crown with an impressive 8-2 record, 3½ points clear of their nearest rivals, New York, who finished at 4½-5½. However, the Blitz fell to New York in the USCL Championship Semi-Final, going down 3-1 despite having the draw odds.
The 2006 Blitz team consisted of GM Larry Christiansen, GM Eugene Perelshteyn, IM Igor Foygel, FM Steven Winer, FM William Kelleher, NM Charles Riordan, NM Vadim Martirosov and Ilya Krasik.
2007 saw the Blitz once again take home the Eastern Division title, finishing with a 7-3 record, losing only one game in the process to New York in week 7.
2007 was also the season that the so called “Charbonneau Curse” was broken. GM Pascal Charbonneau had become a thorn in the Blitz’s side with nobody able to beat him and, even worse, losing frequent games to him in key match situations. However, with New York and Boston once again meeting in the USCL Championship Semi-Final, Sammour-Hasbun pulled off a major coup on board 2 by beating the Canadian GM to help the Blitz to a 2½-1½ win.
The Championship game was a fantastic match that ended up with the Blitz losing out to the Dallas Destiny on the final possible tie-break game after having tied the regular match 2-2. In the end fatigue probably was the deciding factor as Christiansen lost an easily drawn ending against IM Drasko Boskovic who became the hero of the 2:00 am hour for Dallas.
2007 also saw the Blitz introduce some new players to their lineup which included GM Larry Christiansen, GM Eugene Perelshteyn, SM Jorge Sammour-Hasbun, FM William Kelleher, NM Vadim Martirosov, NM Denys Shmelov, Ilya Krasik and NM Chris Williams. IM Igor Foygel and NM Charles Riordan were the designated alternates for the season although neither player was used.
All three of the new players, made it to the USCL All-Star teams, Sammour-Hasbun (1st team), Shmelov (2nd team) and Williams (2nd team), along with Christiansen (3rd team), highlighting a great season for the Blitz players. Sammour-Hasbun also won USCL’s Rookie of the Year and, Game of the Year thanks to his win in the USCL Championship Final against Dallas’ IM Davorin Kuljasevic.
The Boston Blitz finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Eastern Division with a record of 7½-2½, just a half-point behind the eventual winners, New Jersey Knockouts.
2009 also saw the Blitz suffer their first ever “sweep” in a game as they lost their week 3 encounter to the Dallas Destiny, 4-0. This rare scoreline was repeated in their only other loss in the regular season when they played New Jersey in week 8.
The Blitz were knocked out of play-off contention, ending their season, after a heart breaking 2½-1½ loss in the quarter finals to the New York Knights, despite having draw odds.
2009 saw the Blitz field their first ever female chess player as WGM Anya Corke played 3 times finishing with a +1, =2, -0 record. Other new players included youngsters Andrew Wang and alternate Stuart Finney.
The complete 2009 roster included GM Larry Christiansen, GM Eugene Perelshteyn, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun, Denys Shmelov, IM Marc Esserman, Vadim Martirosov, WGM Anya Corke, Ilya Krasik and Andrew Wang. IM David Vigorito and Stuart Finney were the alternates for the year although neither of them played in any matches.
Jorge Sammour-Hasbun took over the Manager position from Matt Phelps who moved down to Assistant Manager.
