He Played What?

Ok… This has to be a quick and dirty recap of the Boston’s win over the Queen’s Pioneers (2.5 – 1.5) since this is a short week with our next match on Monday. So, first congratulations to all the players for making the playoffs once again and for entertaining us with some incredible chess.

It seemed that every single game was… well… weird. Usually, I don’t understand one or two of the games… and I just chalk it up to my own inadequacies… who am I to question GMs and SMs. But, this night was different… I didn’t understand any of the games.

On Board 3, Marc, as White, was off to his usual fast start and won a piece in like… 10 moves?… against a strong IM?… in which his opponent played the very safe and solid Caro-Kahn?

Second board had Eugene, after a very nice opening as Black, pitch the exchange for no reason and no compensation, against a strong IM… and draw?

Andrew, playing Black on board 4, seemed to be struggling in the opening… but everybody told me I was crazy and he was winning?… and he did?… with a nice positional exchange sac which, of course, I never saw coming?

Finally, Larry, as White, played… well, his usual, incomprehensible (at least to me) opening… got into trouble… dropped a pawn… then, just when it seemed he swindled a draw… again, everyone disagreed with me and said he was lost… and after the team had clinched the match… he just wandered aimlessly into a loss? Why? I don’t know. Third base.

But, I don’t think I know much, these days, not much at all. You see, as you get older, the usable portion of your brain shrinks… and it’s nights like this that make me think that my brain has been washed in too hot water and dried in too high heat… I just don’t understand… not at all.

But, I do appreciate… and especially so, the pieces-flying style, of one SM Esserman, who never fails to entertain…

Video Action from the Blitz vs Queens Pioneers

Here is some video action from the Boston Blitz vs Queens Pioneers, week 1 of the 2009 US Chess League season. Included in the video is the reaction at the end of the match when GM Alex Stripunsky blundered his queen via a mouse slip. There is also an interview with new Boston Blitz Manager, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun.

Eeeeck!! A Mouse!

Can it be? Is it really the beginning of another season? I guess when you get to my age, tempus fugit, space warps, and obviously won games are incredibly lost. My sympathies to Queens and GM Stripunsky and, most of all, to the relayer, who, I assume, was most unceremoniously beaten with fine strips of bamboo.

Oh, the horror of having lost your team’s draw on a relayer’s mouse slip; well at least that’s the story we got. But, more on that later.

It was a match of sorrow and elation as the Boston Blitz met the Queens Pioneers, that other New York team, on a night of the Good… the Bad… and the Ugly! Looking at things from the Boston perspective, let’s start with the first game to finish… and my candidate for “the Ugly” part of the evening.

  Boston Blitz 3-1 Queens Pioneers

The Boston Blitz enjoyed a successful, albeit very fortuitous, start to the 2009 USCL season thanks to a 3-1 victory over the Queens Pioneers.

With the match hanging in the balance at 2-1 to the Blitz, the top board game between the Blitz’s GM Larry Christiansen and Queens’ GM Alex Stripunsky looked like it was going to complete a clean sweep for the players with the white pieces and finish the match in a 2-2 tie. However, with both players having just a couple of minutes remaining, Stripunsky accidentally placed his queen on the a8 square, instead of the clearly winning b8 square. Christiansen immediately went to pick up his knight on c7, which he had intended to place on e8 as a pre-calculated response to meet the queen check on b8. However, noticing that something wasn’t quite right, he hesitated, thought for a few seconds and instead of blocking the check, he used the same knight to now capture the en prise queen, much to the delight and cheer of his teammates and the gathered spectators at the Blitz site.

After confirming with the league that the move made on the board was going to stand, Stripunsky had nothing better than to resign the game, changing what looked like a certain tie into a victory for the Blitz.

Blitz vs Queens, 2009 Week 1

Boston Blitz vs Queens Pioneers
7:00 pm, Monday, August 31, 2009

Woohoo!

The 2009 season starts tonight and the Blitz kick off the road to the 2009 US Chess League Championship with a match-up against that other team from New York, the Queens Pioneers.

The Pioneers will be immediately looking for revenge as the Blitz were the team responsible for knocking them out in the first round of the play-offs last year, although to put it bluntly, the two teams only met in the first round thanks to Queens’ horrendous collapse at the end of the regular season, which saw them drop into 2nd place when they should have easily finished at the top.

Admittedly, the loss in the quarter-final was also probably helped by the fact that they decided not to play their player of the year, IM (GM elect) Alex Lenderman, and his subsequent critical outburst has seen him defect over to Philadelphia where he will be player/coach/manager.

To compensate for that loss, they have in return managed to poach Carolina’s top board IM (GM elect) Lev Milman (actually he finished up his studies at Duke and moved to NY but it didn’t sound as good). Milman will be used predominantly on board 2 and this should help him tremendously as he will no longer have the continued underdog tag that he had week in and week out on the top board in Carolina.

Queens also have added league blogger, WFM Elizabeth (Liz) Vicary, to their roster although she is jet setting around the globe and will miss the first week.  No doubt Queens will probably win the blogger of the year contest this year…

Seinfeld Tops Ratings!

“All the World’s a stage…” and, yes, we’re merely players… chess players, that is… and thanks to Chris Bird’s Boston Blitz Picture Show… we’re in show-biz.

Blitz pre-match rehearsal

“Who is that guy with the Australian accent?” was the most common question I got from viewers…  “That’s no Australian.”  I replied.  “Martian is a closer description.”  But, hey it was one heck of a good time as the Blitz proved once again… they are in the running for the USCL cup… or whatever it’s called.

Chris hosted the first ever Live Webcast of any USCL match, specifically, the Boston Blitz vs. Queen’s Pioneers round one playoff match, in elegant style… dressed in Armani tee shirt and matching Gucci sneakers… he was, to say the least, impressive.  The analysis was crisp and incisive as a cast of thousands (would you believe hundreds?) joined in during the four hour… let’s all bash the dumb moves and pretend we saw the good ones coming… number one rated webcast.  Such Boston chess luminaries as Paul MacIntyre,  Charles Riordan,  Vadim Matirisov,  Chris Williams… and of course, team Captain Jorge Sammour-Hasbun… who openly admitted that being made captain was the only way Matt could keep him on the bench this night.

From the beginning Jorge had it pegged… “Ilya must win.”  I thought it was too much pressure to place on Boston’s secret weapon… but, it turned out to be the correct strategy and the only way to a happy ending on this night of the Stars…

Boston Blitz 2½-1½ Queens Pioneers

Board White Result Black
1. GM Larry Christiansen (2670) 1-0 GM Alex Stripunsky (2601)
2. IM Dmitry Schneider (2508) 1-0 GM Eugene Perelshteyn (2619)
3. Marc Esserman (2307) ½-½ IM Eli Vovsha (2532)
4. Aleksandr Ostrovskiy (2042) 0-1 Ilya Krasik (2144)
  Boston Blitz 2½-1½ Queens Pioneers

The Boston Blitz advanced to the 2008 USCL Semi-Finals on Monday night by overcoming draw odds to beat Queens 2½-1½.  In an action packed night, the Blitz sealed the victory thanks to wins from the top and the bottom and what looked like (at least to me) a miracle draw from Marc Esserman.

GM Larry Christiansen was the first game to finish on board 1, giving the Blitz team a lift with a crucial win.  Christiansen had pressured his opponent, GM Alex Stripunsky, throughout most of the game and managed to work his way through some complications set by Stripunsky by an interesting pawn sacrifice.  The win was secured when Stripunsky blundered a piece in time trouble although Christiansen was methodically building up the pressure in a better position.

Marc Esserman was next to finish, scoring a crucial half-point on board 3 against IM Eli Vovsha.  Out of a Nimzo-Indian (which nobody could have predicted for this game) came a 2 pawn sacrifice from Esserman, and to be honest it didn’t look like there was much compensation for the offloaded material.  Many complications ensued with Esserman gaining some active piece play but Vovsha managing to consolidate.  However, the key was that it took Vovsha a long time off his clock to see through all the problems set by Esserman and that eventually told when a tactical melee broke out in mutual time trouble and it looks like Vovsha went wrong somewhere allowing a perpetual check from Esserman.

That draw from Esserman turned out to be key to the match as down on board 4, the Blitz’s Ilya Krasik was able to sew up the match win with a demolition of young Aleksandr Ostrovskiy.  Ostrovskiy played extremely passively in the opening, although he took well over an hour to make his first dozen moves.  Krasik didn’t find the most accurate moves according to the commentary provided by various Blitz players on Boston Blitz TV but Ostrovskiy hadn’t left himself any time to make use of that and his position collapsed in an alarming fashion.  The victory was theoretically sealed when before Ostrovskiy eventually resigned, giving the Blitz the 2½ points needed to advance to the semis.

The last game to finish was GM Eugene Perelshteyn’s loss to IM Dmitry Schneider.  Throughout most of the game it looked like Perelshteyn was doing well enough for a draw but Schneider kept plugging away and he eventually managed to score the full point, making the scoreline a little more respectable from Queens’ perspective.  However, the match had already been wrapped up and little attention was paid to the remaining moves as the celebrations had already begun at the Blitz site.

So the Blitz advance to the Semi-Finals where they will face Carolina Cobras who once again smashed up the New York Knights, this time only by 3½-½.  The colors have already been chosen and Carolina have gone for white on boards 2 and 4, which was a slight surprise given some of the conversations after the match on Monday.

In the Western Division Quarter-Finals, Miami beat Seattle by 2½-1½ while Dallas overcame the same draw odds situation as Boston by beating San Francisco 2½-1½.

Who needs Moose and Squirrel?

Time for props on another successful season for the Blitz… and first on the list is “Fearless Leader” aka. Matt Phelps… who fielded Boston’s strongest lineup in the last match of the year, even though this was not a critical match for us, resulting in a 3½-½  win over Queens, thus, allowing Carolina to sneak in as Eastern champs.  I’m sure Matt got some kind of kick-back from the Cobras for this… and he deserves it.  Matt does an enormous amount of work to setup and organize each match… he gives up his weekly chess club night at MCC… and usually gets rewarded with unfounded criticism and insane penalties when he forgets to do something… really a thankless job… except that he knows that all the players know and appreciate his efforts.

Next on my list is Chris Bird, who has done more to publicize and popularize the Blitz matches than anyone.  He puts in incredible amounts of time creating, maintaining, and writing for the Blitz website.  He even had live webcam coverage of the match and live games on the site for a while, until, disappointingly, for some of us, he just couldn’t continue this practice… due in no way to his unwillingness to do so.  Well, I’m told the webcam may be back for LIVE analysis of ongoing playoff games by Chris and guest analysts… if he can get set up in a secondary room so as not to disturb the players.  Keep your eyes on the Blitz page for confirmation… just another example of the insane amount of work this guy puts in for the team.

Thanks, also, to Philip Nutzman, who assists Matt with the setup and makes the random first move for board two.  He somehow fits time into his busy schedule to help out the team.

There seems to be no end to behind the scenes work.  There is the blogger group… Chris, Me and Ilya… Matt chimes in when he has time.

And last, but not least, the players who put an enourmous amount of prep time into their games and produce some gems for us patzers to enjoy.  But, hopefully, they will gather their thanks at the end in the form of championship glory… we’ll see.

Now, on to the games… as first to finish, GM Larry Christiansen, seems to be rounding into form at just the right time as evidenced by this fine attacking game against Queen’s IM Dmitry Schneider.
